Why are Technical SEO Factors Important?
Twenty-five years ago, the Internet was not as is is today. Technical SEO factors weren’t really a thing. Most companies relied on TV, radio, and the big Yellow Book (the phone book) for advertising to the public. If you could afford a half, or full page ad in that book, you were going to get phone calls. If your name was, “AAA” even better, because phone books were sorted alphabetically. Even when search engines became, “a thing,” it was relatively simple to fill in a few meta tags on your website. You could easily be listed in the top of the meager results provided by fledgling search engines, such as Alta Vista or Lycos. Life for early web developers such as myself was good, easy and prosperous. As time moved on, technical SEO factors became hugely important and are even becoming more so.
These days it’s much tougher!
I have personally identified up to one hundred “on-page” ranking signals that Google uses to rank your website. That’s a lot. This doesn’t even factor in social signals, or even semantic signals. Let’s be clear, I’m only talking about on-page site and server technical signals. Let’s talk about a typical case study. You’re a brand new business, and you use Wix, Weebly, or some software provided to you by a web hosting/domain registrar to build a website yourself. Six months later, your website is nowhere to be found in Google, and you want to know what’s going on. Your website is okay, you know it could look and act better. So you have a website, but no traffic, and worse yet… no calls, and nobody telling you that, “I found you online.” You’re thinking to yourself that everyone you know and everyone you see has a smart phone, but still your site just isn’t where people can find it.
More bad news About Your Website
Typically, and I mean especially in highly-competitive markets, drag and drop websites via DIY just aren’t going to perform up to expectations. After all, whatever tools you use through whatever DIY company you selected isn’t in the SEO business. They’re not even in the web design business. They are in the domain name registration and web-hosting industry, and that’s the bottom line. They don’t really care that your “self-made website” isn’t number one or two or three. As long as you’re paying them monthly for that site, they are happy. Of course they offer so-called SEO packages that might increase your site’s likelihood of ranking on Google a small degree. The honest truth is that those types of websites just aren’t ever going to dominate any competitor that has a good web designer with a full breadth of knowledge about technical SEO, and build sites to reflect that knowledge.
Any Good News?
You may be doing a lot right when it comes to your business. You probably have your business on Facebook, and perhaps have created Google My Business listing. That stuff helps tremendously. Of course as I mentioned above, that doesn’t factor into the main ranking signals that affect your website, and thus your livelihood. After all, Google started as a company that analyzes websites, and that’s still what they do at their core today. They love so see a quality-built website that checks all the boxes of their logarithmic whims. There’s a tremendous amount of work that went into their proprietary PageRank, and it changes all the time. In the past, this rank was able to be manipulated by constantly adding links to your website, but alas, that isn’t a thing anymore. Now it’s just quality code, and making sure that you are checking off these technical SEO items, and of course social ranking signals. Less important than ever is who’s linking in to your web address.
